Return to Von Iva

Friday, December 5, 2008

Jillian Iva sounds like one of those great obscure soul singers you stumble across on a compilation you picked up in the bargain bin, only she took a side trip through Detroit -- and not the Motown side of the tracks. She has a lot of rock 'n' roll in her voice, which sort of sounds like a Jack White guitar solo.

Iva fronts Von Iva, a San Francisco trio also starring keyboardist Bex and drummer Kelly Harris. Bex adds a heavy dose of 1980s synth doom (minus the gloom) while Harris plays like she grew up listening to an angrier version of Bun E. Carlos.

I'm telling you this only because someone forwarded me a link to the band's video for "Do It!" and it got me pretty fired up. There's something about sexy ladies playing a rock 'n' roll version of Stax/Volt in a junkyard that really speaks to me.
