Red Sun Rising Shares Sophomore Album 'Thread': Exclusive First Listen

3/29/2018 by Gary Graff

It's been two and a half years since Red Sun Rising released its debut album, Polyester Zeal,a Top 10 Heatseekers album that launched a pair of Mainstream Rock No. 1 singles, "The Otherside" and "Emotionless." And that's generated some heat for the Ohio hard rock group's sophomore effort Thread, which comes out Friday (March 30) and is premiering exclusively below.

"Knowing that there were people expecting this record was a cool feeling," frontman Mike Protich tells Billboard. "That was different from the debut record, for sure."

Working with producer Matt Hyde, Red Sun Rising set out to make Thread something of a "rebirth" for the band, showing off new skills and musical ambitions developed over the course of touring to promote Polyester Zeal. "The biggest thing was we wanted to have something more authentic to what we sound like live," Protich explains, "not that the first one didn't but it was more of a slick production and we wanted to have something a little more raw on this one as well as showcase that our songwriting has evolved. We definitely messed with some arrangements a lot more than we did in the past and really pushed the limits further on what a popular song sounds like."

Red Sun Rising previewed some of the Thread tracks, including "Lonely Girl" and "Clarity," the latter of which "was actually a different song that we totally revamped and deconstructed" according to Protich. A number of Thread's songs, in fact, went through an evolution in the studio, much to the band's pleasure. "We had fun with a lot of different instruments that weren't on Polyester Zeal," Protich notes. "We really explored that mentality of bringing in different eras of music and genres of music and blending things in to create different textures. That's what's great about the band now, the fact we're not sitting anywhere, exactly, in terms of genre or anything like that. That's what Thread stands for; It's not one thing, but we, the band, are the thread that unites it all."

Red Sun Rising is in the midst of its first headlining run for Thread, while it teams up with the Used for shows in May, as well as festival appearances at Welcome To Rockville, Fort Rock, Carolina Rebellion, Rock on The Range and more. The group will also be part of this summer’s Godsmack/Shinedown package, which kicks off July 22 in Independence Township, Mich.
