Super Acapella Group, Pentatonix singing and beat boxing their way to the top
by Kenny Lopez
Super Acapella group, Pentatonix is heating up the music world with their unique style and vocals. The group kicked off their national tour in New Orleans last week at the House of Blues.
The group’s infectious melodies and soulful harmonies rocketed them to fame after winning Season 3 of the TV show, “The Sing Off”.
Scott Hoying, Kirstie Maldonado, Mitch Grassi, Avi Kaplan, and Kevin “K.O.” Olusola make up this quintet of talent.
With a unique name like Pentatonix we just had to ask what’s in a name?
“It’s the five scale of music. Pentatonic is the most widely recognized scale in the world. There are five of us, so we thought it would work, and we just added an X at the end,” Maldonado said.
Fame is the name of the game for these young vocal sensations. The group’s best known for performing cover songs only using their voices. Nicki Minaj’s “Starships”, Fun’s “We are Young”, and Justin Timberlake’s “Pusher Love Girl” are a few stand-outs.
“Some songs we hear and we just realize that it will be good for our voices,” Olusola said.
As artists growth is inevitable.
“We have two original songs. The next album is going to be half original songs and the other half will be cover songs. We’re always going to love cover songs because that’s what we started with, but I’m really loving our original songs,” Hoying said.
They’ve recorded two original songs, “Show You How To Love” and “The Baddest Girl”.
“There’s a feeling of Oh my God, we created this ourselves. It’s matched by nothing else,” Hoying said.
The group’s first album debuted at Number 14 on Billboard’s Top 2oo—selling nearly 20-thousand copies in it’s first week.
