Dazzled: The Barneys New York Holiday Window Unveiling with Baz Luhrmann
and Catherine Martin
It wasn’t snowing but last night’s chilly weather provided an appropriate backdrop for the revelers trying to get in the holiday spirit at the unveiling of Barneys New York’s windows by director Baz Luhrmann and his wife, costume designer Catherine Martin. As guests including Anna Wintour, Hamish Bowles, Michael Avedon, and Victoria Justice took in the cacophony of sights, confetti enveloped the crowd, and various performances including a live set from an a cappella group, Pentatonix, got everyone dancing in their seats. Just as the windows were unveiled—spoiler alert—featuring a mesmerizing ice dancer, a gilded “truth” owl, and many more fanciful creatures, a drumline procession provided the beat needed for guests to head on to a dinner celebration a few blocks away at the Central Park Zoo.
Greeting Kate Foley and Max Osterweis at the zoo were nymphs on stilts, keeping in theme with the fairy tale–like setting, and sprinkled throughout the cocktail reception were this year’s CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund runner-up Eva Zuckerman, Deborra-Lee Furness, Zani Gugelmann, and Jessica Joffe.
With the holidays on the horizon, conversation turned to upcoming plans and wish lists. “I just want to take a holiday,” said Luhrmann in a midnight blue ensemble from Alexander McQueen by Sarah Burton, while Martin, in Prada and Amelia Toro, said, “Time with my family, friends, and a cold, crisp glass of champagne.” Martin also hinted that some of the evening’s decor may wind up at her house for the holidays. “I’ll snaffle a few of the props from tonight,” joked Martin, adding, “the props get taken by the children, but I’m very possessive of my Christmas tree.” Also focusing on family was Deborra-Lee Furness who said she’s looking forward to “family time, free time, decorating a Christmas tree—and lots of calories!”
Actress Dakota Fanning stopped by in a decidedly mod cape dress by Saint Laurent punctuated by suede boots also from the French house. The actress whose film Effie Gray is slated to open this month said that she’s looking forward to some peace and quiet during the upcoming season. “I want to rest,” said the actress, “and to be with my family.” However, actress Victoria Justice, in a leopard-print coat from Kate Spade, is finally breaking down and splurging on a necessity. “I am looking to get my first car,” exclaimed the Los Angeles resident. “I want to get something economical, but I’m open to suggestions.”
Heading into the tented dinner were Lisa and Richard Perry, Julie Henderson, and singer Estelle who took in the mesmerizing surroundings before sitting down to a meal of poached lobster, dibbled chicken, and tiny elegantly decorated desserts. However, before the final course was served, Luhrmann brought back the Pentatonix (who hopped onto a dinner table) for one more round of songs, leading to cheers from the crowd. Let the holidays begin!
