This afternoon I had the awesome opportunity of chatting with LA's hottest acapella group, Pentatonix. I spoke with Scott and Avi. Pentatonix most recently competed on NBC's The Sing Off last year, they even made it to the finale. From popular covers, guilty pleasures, and old school choir days, we delve into the life and times of Pentatonix. So, get ready to kick into high gear, because it's going to be one hell of a ride...

MS: When did Pentatonix form? Where did the name come from?

PTX: We formed around June 3/4th 2011.

Scott: I was studying music theory at USC, and I was learning about Pentatonic scale, there are five scales, and five people in the band, so its works out great.

MS: What were your musical inspirations growing up?

PTX: Scott: I really love R&B like, John Legend, Marc Broussard, Mitch loves electronic like Deadmau5, Kristy really likes singer-songwriter stuff like Sara Bareilles, and Christina Perri.

Avi: I really love folk like Bon Iver, Iron & Wine. Kevin really likes classical and jazz.

MS: What was like to perform on “The Sing Off?”

PTX: It was crazy experience! Together we propelled each other. It was a great platform, our EP and Youtube always really helps as well.

MS: Any plans to release an EP or full-length?

PTX: We just released our EP on June 26th. We're not quite sure about releasing a full-length yet, depends on how many original tracks we come up with, we might just release another EP.

MS: Were any of you choir geeks like myself?

PTX: We were all choir geeks! We love everything to do with choir.

MS: What is your favorite cover and favorite original songs to peform?

PTX: Our favorite cover is “Love Lockdown” by Kanye West because of the emotion the songs carries when we sing it. Another is “Let's Get It On” by Marvin Gaye. Also “Telephone” and “Until The End of Time”.Our favorite original song is “Baddest Girl” it's just really a lot of fun!

MS: What's your favorite thing to do on a day off?

PTX: Hang with friends at the Grove, or do lunch somewhere.

MS: Favorite place you've performed so far?

PTX: At the NBA All-Star Game in FL. We performed in from of live audience, that even included Mary J. Blige, Nicki Minaj and Ne-Yo. Nicki and Ne-Yo came over and congratulated and told us how much they love our sound. It was one of those moments you have, where you ask yourself, “is this real life?”

MS: Any musical guilty pleasures?

PTX: Justin Bieber, and Carly Rae Jensen's, “Call Me Maybe”

MS: Anybody that you would love to collaborate with?

PTX: Beyonce. Jazmine Sullivan, Deadmau5, and Imogen Heap.

MS: What are your favorite home-cooked meals?

PTX: Scott: BBQ ribs and chicken Avi: I'm obsessed with chicken. I love fried chicken. Tart and Roscoes Chicken and Waffles are some of my favourite places.

MS: Any advice for established acapella groups or bands?

PTX: Think outside the box. Don't let anyone tell you can't do it. Do what you want. Develop your own style, believe in it, and love what you're doing.

MS: Describe the group in three words.

PTX: Innovative. Passionate. Humble.
