Sound Check: Pentatonix wants to break out of covers mold WITH VIDEO

It’s been two years since Pentatonix won the third season of NBC’s reality contest show “The Sing-Off.” And the Arlington, Texas, a cappella quintet is still singing the praises of the exposure it’s received from the show.
“I think we’ve been very happy with how things have gone,” says the group’s Scotty Hoying. “Usually after reality shows, the hype and everything dies down pretty quickly, just ’cause there’s so many reality shows out there.
“But through YouTube and social media and our amazingly awesome, supportive fans, we’ve been able to keep songs out there and been able to tour and play bigger and bigger venues. It feels like things are really taking off for us, so we feel thankful and blessed to do our hobby as a profession.”
Pentatonix has so far released a pair of EPs, “PTX Volume 1” and “PTXmas,” both during 2012, and Hoying, 21, says the group is working on a “PTX Volume 2” that will likely include more original songs than covers. “We’re trying to slowly but surely become an original band rather than cover artists, so expect lots of originals,” he says. But that doesn’t keep the Pentaholics, who favor the group’s renditions of Katy Perry’s “E.T.,” the Buggles’ “Video Killed the Radio Star,” Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On” and others from suggesting more material for Pentatonix’s repertoire.
“All the time,” Hoying says with a laugh. “People are always Facebooking what they want us to sing, and every now and then we do a poll to let them vote on something that we’ll arrange. We get (Queen’s) ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ all the time, which I feel like is a weird suggestion for us, but we might be able to do an arrangement of it. You never say never, you know?”
