Pentatonix stays ahead of curve

By Mike Weatherford
Twice now, the popularity of the a cappella group Pentatonix has been one step ahead of the people booking them.

In December 2012, “The Sing-Off” TV winners packed the Hard Rock Cafe on the Strip, and it was clear to those who did the packing that the show could have played the House of Blues at Mandalay Bay.

So that’s where they are going to be Wednesday. But ticket sales prompted the club to open its second-floor reserved seating — a rare occurrence these days — and then to sell standing room tickets in back of those seats.

If we are to predict a pattern here, might we suggest the Palms or Hard Rock Hotel book them next time? Or should they jump straight to an arena?

If you have to ask why this quintet is so popular, listen to covers that they’ve nearly stolen from their rightful owners, such as Imagine Dragons’ “Radioactive.”

Or check their low-fi YouTube videos. They’ve not only spoofed “The Wizard of Oz” but jumped right onto the “Frozen” phenomenon with a dressing room minimovie.
