Winners of The Sing Off, Pentatonix, stopped by the Lite FM Stduio to talk to Tony and David about becoming a band and what it’s like being a vocal only group.

Kevin Olusola, Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, Kirstie Maldonado and Avi Kaplan make up the 5 person A Capella group who won the last season of NBC’s “The Sing Off”. They have been touring America over the past year. Their next stop in Hawaii on March 30th.

Three of the members, Scott, Mitch & Kirstie are from Arlington, Texas and planned on auditioning as a trio for the TV competition. The three decided to add a bass and beat boxer to round out their sound and met Avi through a mutual friend in LA and found Kevin on Youtube beat boxing with a cello. They reached out to him and asked Olusola to join the group in LA for the auditions.

Kevin had never thought about beat boxing as a career. “I saw it as a musical extension of who I am and see how I could use it for music, not just because I could beat box,” Olusola said. “Once I started using it with the cello I think it started coming to life and then I met these guys.”

The five met as a group for the first time just a day before their first audition with producers and casting directors of ‘The Sing Off’. Kevin described the first time meeting and singing together as, “very magical, very divine and we just knew that this is something we need to do.”

While the band seems to be able to perform any song out there not every song works well for the vocal only group. Mitch said the band wanted to cover “I Knew You Were Trouble” by Taylor Swift but the song just didn’t work for the band so they scrapped it.

Their latest cover actually jumps away from from the vocal only style and adds violinist Lindsey Sterling and Kevin on cello to their arrangement for a fantastic cover of Imagine Dragon’s “Radioactive”.

What is next for the group? Scott pointed out that Pentatonix wants to be a mainstream group, something that hasn’t really been done with A Capella before.

If you missed their show earlier in March they are touring America now and don’t be surprised to see them back on ‘The Sing Off’ stage as the show was re-vitalized this past week by NBC for another season.
