FoF chats with Pentatonix

A 5-person vocal band born in Arlington, Texas that combines various genres such as pop, soul, R&B, and electronic music. Vocal sensations and winners of season 3 of NBC’s The Sing-Off, Pentatonix are taking instrument-free music far beyond anyone’s wildest expectations. Named after the world’s most widely recognized five-note musical scale, this vocal quintet has transformed one of pop music’s purest and most soulful expressions into an exciting future, filled with limitless sonic possibility. Pairing their intricate arrangements with cleverly re-imagined pop songs, Pentatonix have quickly cultivated a sound and style that is entirely unique and undeniably infectious.

FoF- First off, thank you all for taking time out of your busy schedule to chat with us today.

PTX- Of course, thanks for chatting with us!

FoF- What has been the most challenging song you have done to date and what song have you not done yet that you want?

PTX- Probably our most challenging song was "The Dog Days Are Over" by Florence and the Machine.. For some reason, it was the pentultimate week of "The Sing-Off," and we didn't figure out the arrangement until the very day before taping. It's such a diverse piece with such interesting instrumentation, we weren't sure if we could be able to pull it off. We all really love "Thinkin' Bout You" by Frank Ocean, and would love to make an arrangement to that!

FoF- Tomorrow, November 13th is the release of your first Christmas album that will be available on your site, Amazon and on iTunes. What can fans expect on this release and what is each member’s favorite song from this upcoming release?

PTX- We were really excited to come out with a Christmas album because we all love Christmas and definitely wanted to put our own spin on a couple of our favorites! Fortunately, I think we all got to solo our favorite Christmas songs which was also fun! We hope that people will just feel happy and warm when listening to our album, because we put a lot of heart and work into it and wanted it to be a fun album that will bring everyone the holiday spirit!!

FoF- What is everyone’s level of musical training?

PTX- Mitch, Scott, Avi and Kirstie have taken many years of voice lessons and have been singing in shows, choir, touring groups etc for years. Kevin has been playing the cello for 6 years. We all have varying levels of knowledge in music theory. The trio was involved in musical theatre and all five of us have been classically trained at a point.

FoF- Since winning the 3rd Season of NBC’s The Sing-Off, it seems like PTX has been going nonstop. One of the most impressive things is the constant interaction with your fans via your Twitter & YouTube account. What has it been like giving your fans that kind of access and then meeting them while on tour?

PTX- The fans have been amazing and we love connecting with them. We would not be able to be doing what we are doing and living out our dream each day without them. They are constantly supportive and all SO NICE! We could honestly say we have the best fans ever, and meeting them while being on tour has been awesome.

FoF- One of our favorite things from your time during Season 3 was the medley song Forget You/Since You’ve Been Gone when we saw the focus on Avi & Kevin. We can only imagine traveling together must be a mini-concert/party; whether it is on a plane, car, bus, karaoke night or ordering a coffee. We have our thoughts on this but who is the clown of the group, responsible one and so on…..?

PTX- Thanks! Yes, we are ALWAYS singing. I think we all have our funny moments but the funniest by far is Mitch! He is just so witty and quick and he always makes all of us laugh. Occasionally we joke that Avi and Kevin are the mother and father of our little PTX fam, and the trio are the kids. It's not just because the trio is the youngest, it's just that Avi and Kevin definitely have to keep us in line sometimes because we're off being too silly or something, and they are the more responsible ones. All in all, it's all really fun and we keep each other happy but on task.

FoF- Have you kept up with anyone from the Sing-Off?

PTX- Yes! The Sing-Off was awesome because it was like music camp. Everyone was there for their love of music and everyone was so nice, so it was very easy to get along with all the groups and make life-time friends, even though we were all from different places. Occasionally we will see a couple of them as well, and it's always really fun! Kirstie met her boyfriend on the show and a lot of other members have moved or are planning to move out to LA and we will welcome them with excitement and open arms! We love staying in touch!

FoF- What was it like heading to China for their version of The Sing-Off? It was fun as a viewer to see the host and Kevin converse back and forth, even though we had no idea what you were saying.

PTX- Mitch and Kirstie had never been out of the country before so going to China as their first experience of that was kind of a culture shock, but an awesome one! Same! Basically, we all clung to Kevin the entire trip, seeing as how we could not even order food or ask any type of question without him! It was a really fun experience over all though. It's so amazing how even though there's a language barrier, we could connect with the groups on the show through music. We thought that was so cool. Music transcends and connects everyone.

FoF- What do each of you like to do in your (limited) spare time?

PTX- Scott loves to hang out with friends and do outdoorsy things like hike or play sand volleyball. He also loves video games and movies, and social media is his biggest addiction!

Kirstie loves reading and is slowly learning how to domesticate herself, with aspirations of being on Cupcake Wars, haha. When she's home in LA, she usually just goes out with her boyfriend watching movies, checking out new food places in LA, etc. And of course, shopping for clothes is her love.

Kevin has a huge interest in China. He's fluent in Chinese and lived there for 1.5 years. He still reads daily. He practices cello a lot and wants to learn more music production!

Mitch loves exploring & discovering new music. He likes to DJ in his spare time, as well as read a ton of books!

Avi loves food so cooking and finding awesome places to eat is pretty high on the list! He also loves to play guitar and write music but after tour he sits and watches TV for hours on end.

FoF- Last week, tickets for your 2013 Winter Tour went on sale. Having one tour already under your belt, what are you looking forward to most with this new tour?

PTX- Now that we have the general gist of touring, every show has been even more fun! Touring is awesome, so I think we're all just excited to do it all over again, but this time with everything upgraded a bit! We'll have some new songs, cool lighting, great sound; we just want to improve our show and add new things so everything feels fresh and we can keep fans interested!

FoF- We are curious what is everyone’s favorite song?

PTX- Scott's favorite song is constantly changing but currently is "Thinkin Bout You" by Frank Ocean.

Kirstie's favorite song that she can't stop listening to changes year to year or depending on her mood but ultimately she will always be in love with "Gravity," by Sara Bareilles.

Currently, Mitch's favorite song is "Bad News" by Knife City.

Avi's favorite song always changes but right now it's "Alesund" by Sun Kil Moon.

Kevin's favorite song is "Superstition" by Stevie Wonder.

FoF- Recently we saw your take on Gangnam Style and what was nice was seeing the bloopers. Is that something fans can expect to see with certain covers?

PTX- Sure! I think Gangnam was just an obvious cover to have bloopers because it's funny, we had to learn Korean, and we had to dance. And there's a lot to mess up there haha!! And we all can't be serious because we laugh, but we got it together eventually. Making that video was so fun though.

FoF- Having covered so many songs, have you heard from any of the original artists on your interpretation and if so can you share who and what they said?

PTX- Yes! Gotye reached out to us and our producer Ben Bram and said that he really liked our cover! He actually put together a mash-up of a bunch of covers of "Somebody That I Used to Know" and he featured us! So to get recognition from him was awesome, we were thrilled!!

FoF- For fans that want to pursue music or a capella or even compete nationally, what advice would you give?

PTX- Put all your heart and soul into your music and what you're doing. There's no need to overanalyze or doubt yourself, because you have to feel confident in yourself in order for people to feel that way about you. But with that, you have to stay humble and gracious. Every opportunity you get should be taken with humility and graciousness, and you should always give it 110%, because it will only bring you more success or experience. Be meticulous with your work and be a hard worker. Everything is always a thousand percent better when you make sure it's perfect so take that extra step and do it. And if you're pursuing music you should be doing it because it makes you happy and you wouldn't know what you'd do without it. So keep that feeling and remember it, because that is your fuel! And break a leg everyone, the music industry can be difficult, but as an artist it can also be so rewarding to simply be doing what you love every day.

FoF- Since we know your time is limited, I don’t want to keep you any longer from your schedule. On behalf of everyone at the FoF, thank you all again for your time and we would like to make PTX Honorary FoF members. We hope you have a great Thanksgiving and looking forward to what’s in store in 2013.

PTX- Yay, thank you!!! You too, thank you again for talking with us!
