Pentatonix showers Denver in vocal elegance

February 19, 2014

The talented A’capella vocal group, Pentatonix have carved a path for their genre in the music industry. Proving American’s and the world are craving something a bit heartier and more refined than the autotuned, electronic era offers, they boast a YouTube channel with over 300 million views, three very successful albums and are currently on a domestic tour which is 100% sold out nationwide. The tour is in support of the recently released album, ‘PTX Volume 2’ and when they pulled into Denver on Saturday, February 15, 2014, the day after the world celebrates love, they didn’t seem to anticipate the level of adoration they would receive from the capacity crowd in the Mile High city.

After opening their set with ‘Daft Punk’, what is arguably their best medley to date, frontman Scott Hoying declared, “I’m obsessed with you guys already.” And that was because the crowd was on their feet electrified by the piercing vocal offerings of the five piece A’capella vocal storm. Adding to that he stated, “This is my favorite stop on tour, so far,” before launching into their next song. It turned out to be a medley also, a tribute of sorts to Beyonce, which combined pristine harmonies to generate a stunning rendition of some of her greatest hits.

As the evening progressed, PTX performed songs sampling their vast repertoire of covers, seasoned with original offerings such as the first song they sang during season three of The Sing Off, to a very emotional performance of an original they wrote off their current album, ‘Run To You’. They unearthed some of their lesser known talents as beat boxer, Kevin Olusola played a song he wrote on the cello while beatboxing at the same time. Bassist Avi Kaplan captivated the crowd with his performance, ‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight’ singing only in overtones.

Overall it was an impressive set that had the Denver audience on their feet from start to finish. They closed the evening out covering Macklemore's hits and showering the audience with confetti. The adulation was mutual as the roar of ovation brought the five skillful singers back onstage for a two song encore. They left the stage at the Paramount Theater in Denver first, before any of their guests left the auditorium, confirming they are one of the hottest tickets this spring and are as entertaining as their voices are purely on fire!
