MANSFIELD - Lee DeWyze, the winner of American Idol Season 9, will perform at 9 p.m. Aug. 27 in the chapel at the Ohio State Reformatory.
At OSR, the historic prison-turned-museum, DeWyze will perform an acoustic set without any amplification other than the natural acoustic provided by the walls of the prison. Tickets are $99.
DeWyze toured OSR earlier this year when he had some free time. He said "The Shawshank Redempion," filmed at OSR and throughout central Ohio, is his all-time favorite movie.
"It was amazing," said DeWyze, adding OSR staff allowed him to perform inside the prison chapel on his guitar and even videotape the session.
He knew he wanted to come back.
"The acoustics are unlike anything I've heard," he said of the chapel. "It was unbelievable."
At DeWyze's OSR show, he plans to play a lot of new music he's written.
He describes his music as "Indie-folk-rock" and himself as a singer-songwriter.
After winning American Idol Season 9, DeWyze's real breakout moment came when he wrote an original song for "The Walking Dead." He plans to perform "Paranoia" at the show.
"Blackbird Song'' has more than 10 million YouTube views collectively.
DeWyze, who spoke to the News Journal by telephone, promised fans will enjoy the intimate atmosphere of the chapel, where inmates used to attend church.
Since the release of "Blackbird Song," DeWyze has gone on to have more than 35 syncs and placements in TV shows including "Nashville" and "Hart of Dixie."
When not in his studio writing, he is consistently touring the United States, performing more than 100 shows per year for the last four years. He has most recently opened for Lady Antebellum, and also performed at The Sundance Film Festival, The Grammy Foundation, MusiCares and SXSW.
The Illinois native put out three records before he won American Idol. He hopes all his fans will come and see him perform the new music.
"It's going to be a very unique and special show," he said. "For the past one and a half years I've been working on new music. I think people will be surprised."
