Return to KONGOS

Summerfest 2014
Reviews: Walk Off The Earth, Girl Talk, Kongos, John Hiatt and the Combo, Robert DeLong and more

The four Kongos brothers didn't take a usual path to success. After moving from South Africa to Phoenix before high school, they sent their music back to radio stations in their former home, where they became stars. After performing for stadiums in Johannesburg, they watched their star rise in U.S. with their chart-topping rock hit "Come With Me Now."

Saturday night at the U.S. Cellular Connection Stage, Kongos revealed a multi-layered sound of primitive pounding drums, swirling synthesizers, rock swagger and the hippest accordion work likely to be seen at the lakefront this year. Their influences spanned the globe, from the Eastern European touch of "Sex on the Radio" to the swelling reggae undercurrent of "Take Me Back" and head-banging American rock of "Kids These Days."
