Music Review: Trevor Hall, Trevor Hall

Trevor Hall debuts his own style of pop meets reggae with his self-titled release and now let’s see if it will work for us or not. “Internal Heights” opens this disc with a sitar-infused techno mix fueled with Hall’s bellowing baritone that has tons of echo and depth. Trevor turns it down to a traditional island vibe on “Who Ya Gonna Turn To” as simplistic acoustic guitar and twinkling of percussive beats gives us a laid-back flow that gently calms your senses.

“The Lime Tree” continued where “Who Ya Gonna Turn To” started from; yet seems more like a silky R&B cut with toned down lyrics and mid-tempo refrains that are scintillatingly smooth. He livens things up with a saucy dancehall meets pop rock ditty on “Volume” as light-hearted frets meet up with catchy keyboards and his refreshingly wailing harmonies that will surely please many different tastes. “Where’s The Love” brings back the reggae intensely with its peaceful tenor and wonderful message of love and hope.

Next is “My Baba” as Trevor Hall sweetly sings toward God backed by Krishna Das setting this one on an orchestral chemistry exploding into a cultural volcanic explosion. “Sing The Song” blasts out aggressively into a rasta rock and roll experience as he pounds out this foot-stomper giving you the urge to sing this one loud and proud.

“Many Roads” however is a timid ballad that settles things back to earth from the ravenous pitch of “Sing The Song” as Hall strums away and tells us a powerful tale of where lifetakes us. This album finishes quite nicely with “Unity” as this jam could possibly be the anthem for Trevor Hall as Matisyahu joins him on this song lending his blend of soulful lyrics as they both honor how we can all be together as one. Trevor Hall looks like reggae’s newest soldier as his first steps on the battlefield looks promising.

Hall will be promoting his album with a stop at Cleveland's House of Blues tomorrow night. Here is the full list of his tour dates:
