NORMAN — As young ladies, these three Texans left their hometown of San Antonio and took off on the road, knowing that touring was the next logical step in building their band, Girl in a Coma.

The band is composed of Jenn Alva on bass guitar, Phanie Diaz on drums and Nina Diaz on vocals.

“We knew as a band we needed to tour,” Alva said. Before long, the members were hooked on the love of the stage.

“It became kind of like a tattoo — very addictive,” Alva said.

While on the road in 2006, Girl in a Coma was heard by the right people, Joan Jett and Kenny Laguna, who quickly signed them to their label Blackheart Records.

After releasing two albums with original songs, “Both Before I’m Gone” and “Trio B.C.,” the band was asked to create an album based on covers. “Adventures in Coverland” is their latest project.

The women will play songs from all three during their show 9 p.m. Aug. 31 in Norman at the Opolis. The band will play with Gringo Star and Agent Ribbons. Tickets are $10 the day of the show.

Alva said this is their second time to play in Norman. She remembers the stage at the Opolis because of the large artwork of cats decorating the walls of the venue.
