SAN ANTONIO -- Our hometown sweethearts, Girl in a Coma, have just dropped their third album – Adventures in Coverland. The ten track record, which just came out a little more than a week ago, is powerful, yet fun.

Starting with Si Una Vez, I was mesmerized with Nina Diaz’s sultry and Shakira-like sound on this Selina cover. Sung completely in Spanish, the song pays tribute to GIAC’s San Antonio roots.

Track two – While My Guitar Gently Weeps showcases the girls harder side, but still manages to pull off being a rock ballad and a nice remix of this Beatles' original. The guitar riffs smoothly blend with Nina’s voice – not overpowering it – a mistake many rookie bands make. Nothing is more annoying than not being able to understand the words of a song. This is obviously not the girls' first time around and it shows with the musical craftwomanship put into this album.

Another amazing song on this record is a punk rock version of Patsy Cline’s Walking after Midnight. As a Patsy Cline fan, it’s awesome to see this classic song remixed into an edgy, yet not offensive, tune. Check out the video to see what I mean. Walkin’

If I could describe this group, I would dub them a tattooed, Latina mix of Shakira, Garbage and Devil Doll with a splash of Joan Jet and the Blackhearts. If you haven’t heard the girls they’re definitely worth a listen.

A little more about GIAC: Sisters Nina (Lead Vocal/Guitar) and Phanie Diaz (Drums) teamed up with Phanie’s best friend Jenn Alva (Bass) to form the band in 2005. The trio had the opportunity to perform before their idol, Joan Jet at the Knitting Factory in 2006. She immediately signed the Alamo City girls to her label – Black Heart Records. From there the girls have released two records, toured and opened for Morrissey, Social Distortion and the Toadies, as well as played at SXSW in 2007, 2009 and 2010.
