James Durbin starting to follow fans on Twitter

By Brian Mansfield, USA TODAY

James Durbin's turning Twitter's Follow Friday concept on its head. Instead of recommending people that others should follow, the American Idol singer will start following one of his fans later today.

"It's a good way to show your fans that you are for them, that you do care," says James, who'll make the first pick later today and plans to make the Follow Friday selection a weekly event.

And how will he decide from the more than 140,000 people who follow him on Twitter? "Probably based on consistency, how much the super-fans that are on there talk to me and communicate to me and try to reach out to me," says James, who'll release his Memories of a Beautiful Disaster album Nov. 21,. "The person that gets it today will definitely deserve it. And from here on, just the same."

By the way, if you look at the list of people James already follows, you'll see that he followed Scotty McCreery and Black Veil Brides lead singer Andy Biersack at roughly the same time.

"I was already following Scotty, and, somehow, he got unfollowed," James explains. "Around the same time, I had dinner with Andy.

"Funny how that worked."
