Return to Cherie Currie

Matt Sorum On Producing Cherie Currie’s “Blvds Of Splendor,” His Memoir, Philanthrophy & More

1970’s icon and former Runaways singer Cherie Currie finally has confirmed a release date for her latest solo project, the new studio album Blvds Of Splendor. Set to be released digitally on April 28, 2018 via Joan Jett’s Blackheart Records, Blvds Of Splendor was produced by famed drummer Matt Sorum (Guns N’ Roses, Velvet Revolver, The Cult, Tori Amos). The full-length also includes guest collaborations with Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins, Slash and Duff McKagan from both Guns N’ Roses and Velvet Revolver, Juliette Lewis, The Distillers’ Brody Dalle, and The Veronicas.

In 2016, Cherie Currie was set to release Blvds Of Splendor when she had a near-death accident while chainsaw carving, falling over 12 feet to the ground off of a hilltop scaffolding. The accident left Currie with partial facial paralysis and severe head trauma for over 10 months. After her recovery, she met and went in the studio with Fanny drummer and vocalist Brie Darling and in 2019 the two released their critically-acclaimed The Motivator album via Blue Elan Records. Fortunately, Cherie Currie is back to chainsaw carving again and is ready to finally release Blvds Of Splendor, of which Currie had recently gone on record about with the quote: “I’ve never had so much fun making a record before.”

I had the pleasure of speaking with the aforementioned Matt Sorum on April 14, 2020 about Blvds Of Splendor and plenty more. Not only has Sorum served as the drummer of those bands mentioned in the first paragraph, but he has released music as a solo artist and served as the leader of the all-star group Kings Of Chaos. He also keeps busy with a variety of charitable endeavors, including founding Adopt The Arts and Sthorm, serving as a board member of the Dolphin Project and a U.S. ambassador for the Animals Asia Foundation. And that’s beyond his regular participation in benefit shows.
