LA duo’s star is rising

Step aside, “Blurred Lines.” You too, “Get Lucky.” And I don’t want to hear a peep out of you, “We Can’t Stop,” especially not after that spectacle the other night. As far as I’m concerned, LA duo Capital Cities’ “Safe and Sound” is the song of the summer.
Capital Cities’ star is certainly on the rise. LAmb’s Angelica Corona interviewed CC’s Sebu Simonian last May just before the release of the duo’s debut album, In A Tidal Wave of Mystery. Since then, they’ve continued their Dancing with Strangers tour with dates across North America, appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and won the Best Visual Effects VMA with the video for “Safe and Sound.”

I can’t get enough of this video, a visual history of 100 years of dance set at LA’s own newly restored Los Angeles Theater. If you love it, too, then you’ll probably enjoy this making-of video as much as I did.

In A Tidal Wave of Mystery is available for purchase now. Like “Safe and Sound”? Of course you do. You’ll like the album’s second single, “Kangaroo Court,” which brings to mind my beloved Killers if they were to overdose on ’80s synthesizer.

After playing two sold-out shows at El Rey Theatre this summer, the duo will make their way back to LA’s Greek Theatre on November 2nd with Two Door Cinema Club — tickets here — in the midst of their Bright Futures tour with Fitz and the Tantrums.

Until then, I’ll be watching the “Safe and Sound” video on a loop and bitterly rueing my total lack of dance ability.
