Eighties tribal punks Bow Wow Wow have recorded a cover of the Smiths' 'I Started Something' for an upcoming tribute album honoring the Manchester quartet, due out next year.

Bow Wow Wow frontwoman Annabella Lwin, bassist Leigh Gorman and guitarist Phillip Gough were recently approached by Cleopatra Records to remake a Morrissey and Marr classic of their choice. The idea was particularly appealing to Gorman, who fell under Moz's
spell after working with him in the studio.

"It was kind of ironic for me because I worked on Morrissey's 'You Are the Quarry,'" Gorman says. "I did all the demos. To be honest, I wasn't a big fan, [but] when I heard him sing just plain on a microphone with very little help, I was blown away."

No strangers to covers -- Bow Wow Wow rose to fame with their version of the Strangeloves' 1965 hit 'I Want Candy' -- the group quickly made the Smiths track their own. "We played our version of the Burundi beat," says Gorman, "and we put a bit of hi-hat in
there and spaghetti western guitars. It worked straight away."

The band is currently writing its first new material in almost two decades. Expect to hear some of that when they take to the road with Devo this fall.
